2.0 Requirements
- ATI Accelerator Card:
Graphics ULTRA
Graphics VANTAGE
3.0 Installation
The ATI GRAPHICS ULTRA and GRAPHICS VANTAGE video adapters represent
state of the art Personal Computer video technology. While following IBM
VGA standards for producing VGA text and graphics, these adapters require
additional system resources to produce accelerated video capabilities.
Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the ATI INSTALL
utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
adapter does not conflict with other system resources and will
provide optimized performance.
The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
to install an ATI GRAPHICS ULTRA or GRAPHICS VANTAGE video adapter.
1) Upon removing the GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE card from the box, record the
serial number (found on the non-component side of the card) and the BIOS
version (located on a label on a plug-in BIOS on the
component side of the card) in your user manual.
This serial number will assist Customer Support and also ensure that
the Warranty form can be properly completed.
2) Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
range of 2E0 to 2EF.
Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
If you have a system containing an on-board video controller,
consult your owners manual on how to disable it.
Check and record how much system memory is installed on the
system motherboard.
3) Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager device
driver is being loaded.
Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may
interfere with the ATI installation software and should not be loaded
until the ATI video adapter has been completely installed
(For more information on ATI recommended Memory Manager
configurations, please consult ATI Technical Note: TN069
which can be found on the ATI BBS or on our Compuserve Forum)
4) After powering down your system, remove your old video adapter (or
disable the on-board video controller) and plug-in the ATI GRAPHICS
ULTRA/VANTAGE.
Connect the video monitor cable and mouse cable (if applicable) to the
ATI card and power-up the system.
(not all ATI cards have built-in Mouse ports)
If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 2
and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
etc) to determine the nature of the conflict.
As a last resort, if possible, see if the card works in another system.
If the system still does not boot, contact ATI Customer Support with
the system brand and model number.
5) Once the system has properly booted, place Disk 1 of the supplied ATI
GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE disks into the appropriate disk drive and run
the INSTALL program.
The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
be in a "new or changed configuration". If this message appears, press
any key to have the INSTALL program update the GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE
EEPROM.
If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find
a mach8 based video card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove any
memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file. If a different
Error Message appears, carefully record the error message, follow any
instructions listed in the message and contact ATI Customer Support if
the problem persists.
6) When the INSTALL program has completed loading and initialization, it
will present the following screen:

╚══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
PLEASE NOTE: Your actual "Set Power-Up Configuration" may differ from
the above layout due to type of ATI product and system
architecture. The Install program will automatically detect
and present the proper options at install time.
MONITOR TYPE:
Selecting the "Monitor Type" option will produce a list of supported
monitors.
If your monitor is shown, select it from the list and press Enter.
If your monitor does not appear, select the Custom option from the list.
The Custom option will allow you to configure the vertical refresh
rate your monitor supports for each resolution (ie: 640x480, 800x600,
1024x768 and 1280x1024).
It is important to review your monitor manual to determine the proper
refresh rates to use for each resolution.
Selecting a refresh rate that is too high could damage your monitor.
(For more information on Custom Monitor configurations, please consult
ATI Technical Note: TN068 found on the ATI BBS or Compuserve Forum)
POWER UP VIDEO MODE:
The "Power-Up Video Mode" option determines the DOS text and graphics
capabilities when the card is powered-up. Unless the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
contains programs which can only run on an EGA, CGA or MDA video
adapter, this option should remain set to VGA (CV80). This will provide
the highest level of DOS text and graphics resolution.
The ATI GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE card can use 16 BIT ROM Access to
improve DOS Text performance. In some systems and/or some system
configurations, however, this can cause unusual operational problems
(booting problems, applications failing, Windows problems, etc).
VGA ROM CONFIGURATION:
To ensure the most compatible video card configuration, the
"VGA ROM Configuration" setting should be set to 8-bit.
This will not significantly impact on DOS performance and will not
impact on Windows performance.
MOUSE CONFIGURATION:
The mouse port on the GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE can be configured to use
one of two hardware port addresses and an IRQ value between 2 and 5.
For most systems the mouse can be configured to use the Primary address
and IRQ 5.
It is important to ensure that no other devices are using the
selected IRQ or port addresses as unusual mouse operation will result.
If another mouse, trackball or pointing device is going to be used on
the system, the Mouse Configuration can be left at Disabled.
COPROCESSOR BUS I/O:
The "Coprocessor Bus I/O" selection sets the access method the card
will use when sending or retrieving data from its low memory registers.
For optimum performance, this setting should be configured as
"Auto-select".
VGA BUS I/O:
Setting the "VGA Bus I/O" setting to "16-bits" provides optimum VGA and
SuperVGA graphics performance. The "8-bits" option would be used if a
Monochrome or CGA video adapter were installed in the same system with
the GRAPHICS ULTRA/VANTAGE card.
Once all of these options have been set, the "F10" key should be
pressed to save the configuration.
7) From the INSTALL program Main Menu, select the "Test Graphics Adapter"
option.
Please remove any TSR's and/or Boot from a plain DOS diskette.
Running the "Test VGA Color Modes" and the "Run Accelerator
Diagnostics" tests will assist in determining if the GRAPHICS
ULTRA/VANTAGE is operating properly.
Record any error messages and check the VGA ROM Access in the Set
Power-up Configuration Menu, before calling Customer Support.
8) If the diagnostics have passed, reconfigure the memory manager device
drivers in your CONFIG.SYS file, complete the Warranty Registration card
and install any application specific device drivers.
The installation is now complete.

5.0 Installation notes for Windows
When you install Windows drivers, the "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS" option will
create a file named "MACH.WRI" on your hard disk in the Windows directory
you specified.
Please read MACH.WRI after bringing up Windows for the first time
***** READ THE "MACH.WRI" file. *****
6.0 Installation Notes for Autodesk products
The software enclosed with this product has been updated to support
AutoCAD Release 12 and other protected mode PADI-dependent software
programs (e.g. 3D Studio 2.0). Consequently, the pages in this manual
dealing with the installation and use of these drivers is no longer
accurate.
NOTE: AUTOCAD for Windows uses the Windows display drivers.
Version 5.0 for Graphics ULTRA and Graphics VANTAGE software
incorporates DL/Xpress 2.x, a display list driver that is
significantly faster than the Soft Engine 1.57 driver referred to
in the accompanying manual. DL/Xpress 2.x is written by Vibrant
Graphics specifically for the mach8 coprocessor chip.
To install this driver, you must use the INSTALL.EXE program on Disk
#1 of your installation diskettes. Choose "Install ATI Enhanced
Drivers".
Note: The appropriate software package must be installed on your
computer system before you load the ATI Enhanced drivers.
For AutoCAD, choose installation for AutoCAD, then the version you
are using (Release 10, 11 or 12). The installation program will
automatically install the driver for you. It will also decompress a
detailed README.DLX file onto your hard disk. This file contains all
the information necessary for full installation, configuration, and
usage. This file can be read or printed using a word processor. A
hard copy of the manual for DL/Xpress 2.x is not available.
Note: The DL/Xpress README.DLX file is approximately 50 pages in length.
7.0 Installation Notes for CADKEY
Since CADKey Version 6.0 includes driver support for mach8 products, we
have removed this driver from our diskettes. If you need a mach8 driver
for CADKey Version 4.0, you can download it from our bulletin board, or
call our Customer Support line.
8.0 Errors
INSTALL:
--------
The diagnostics utility TEST.COM may malfunction in very fast
machines. "14216 XXXX XXXX Post RAM Examination Failure" messages
from TEST.COM may be ignored.
WINDOWS:
--------
1280x1024 Display Mode on the FlexDesk Control Panel
Earlier versions of the mach8 board were not designed to support
1280x1024 resolution. Run the TEST.COM program that is contained on
this disk to find out if you can display in 1280x1024. This resolution
is available only if you had selected a Monitor Type that is capable of
displaying 1280x1024 in the "Set Power-Up Configuration" menu when you
run INSTALL. If you do not have 1280x1024 capability, do not select
this resolution on the FlexDesk Control Panel.
If you do have 1280x1024 capability, you may select this mode on the
FlexDesk Control Panel; however, if, when you restart Windows, one of
the following happens:
1. The screen goes black and Windows never seems to come up, or
2. Windows comes up, but the display is badly garbled.
then this mode cannot be used. Windows has actually started up, but is
unable to display anything properly. To recover from the above
situation:
1. Press ALT-F4, and then ENTER to exit from Windows.
2. Run the Windows SETUP program from DOS.
3. Reselect the "ATI mach8 Driver". You must reselect the driver,
even if it is listed as the current display driver.
The above steps force the mach driver back to 640x480 resolution and
allow you to start Windows. Once back in Windows, you may select any
resolution other than 1280x1024 in the FlexDesk Control Panel.
- Photostyler 1.0
This program will not function in any mode with 512K ATI
Accelerators. It will also not function in 1280x1024 mode with 1MB
ATI Accelerators.
- Bitstream Facelift
If using Bitstream Facelift with ATI Crystal Font drivers,
attempting to use Facelift Fonts at sizes greater than 35 points
may cause problems with the display.
OS/2 PM 2.1:
------------
The Presentation Manager driver requires a 1MB ATI Accelerator. It
will not function with 512K adapters.
AutoShade 386, 3D Studio:
-------------------------
When you install the AutoShade or 3D Studio drivers, the text file
README.DLX will be copied to the AutoShade/3D Studio directory. This
file contains all the information necessary for full installation,
configuration, and usage. Please refer to README.DLX for current
problems.
